Innovative Marine Technologies brings together Scientists, Local Authorities, and Young People from the Varna Region

On 20 July 2026, the Union of Bulgarian Black Sea Local Authorities (UBBSLA), with the support of the Technical University of Varna, successfully organized the local workshop “Innovative Technologies for Marine Monitoring, Climate Change and Sustainable Blue Development” in Aksakovo under the EfxINNOs project.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including representatives of the Technical University of Varna, the Institute of Fisheries Resources, experts from the Black Sea municipalities of Aksakovo, Balchik, Kavarna, Nessebar and Shabla, youth organizations, students, researchers and citizens interested in the future of the Black Sea and sustainable blue growth.

The workshop served as a platform for knowledge exchange between academia, local authorities and civil society, demonstrating how innovation and cooperation can contribute to protecting marine ecosystems and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

During the seminar, leading scientists and researchers presented cutting-edge research and technological solutions developed within the EfxINNOs project. The programme featured presentations on benthic ecosystem monitoring in the Black and North Aegean Seas, the use of micro Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (micro-AUVs) for mapping marine habitats and detecting marine litter, innovative modelling approaches for predicting oil spill dispersion, and numerical simulations used to better understand physical processes in the marine environment.

A highlight of the event was the interactive discussion session, where participants explored how innovative marine technologies can support environmental protection, strengthen climate resilience, and contribute to sustainable coastal development. Particular attention was given to the role of young researchers and students, who will play a key role in shaping the future of the blue economy in the Black Sea region.

The workshop once again demonstrated that sustainable management of marine resources requires strong collaboration between research institutions, local governments, educational organisations and local communities. Through initiatives such as EfxINNOs, knowledge and innovative technologies are being transferred across the Black Sea Basin, helping to build a more resilient, innovative and environmentally responsible future.

UBBSLA extends its sincere appreciation to all speakers, partners and participants for their valuable contributions and commitment to advancing innovation and sustainable development in the Black Sea region.
