Enhancing Public Access to Knowledge on the Black Sea Environment
The Union of Bulgarian Black Sea Local Authorities (UBBSLA) has implemented a network of interactive digital information kiosks in selected municipalities along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast within the framework of the EfxINNOs project.
The initiative aims to improve public access to reliable, scientifically grounded information on the marine environment, with a particular focus on the condition of the seabed and the structure of underwater habitats in ecologically significant areas of the Black Sea and the North Aegean Sea.
Scientific Basis and Technological Approach
The information presented through the kiosks is derived from data collected using advanced marine observation technologies. Underwater studies are currently being conducted in selected pilot areas using autonomous underwater vehicles (microAUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and a surface buoy equipped with physicochemical sensors, side-scan sonar and underwater imaging systems. These technologies enable comprehensive monitoring and assessment of marine areas, generating high-quality datasets including sonar recordings, photographic documentation and video materials.
The role of the UBBSLA is to ensure that the collected scientific data is processed and presented in a structured, accurate and user-friendly manner. Interactive kiosks transform complex marine research results into accessible digital content, supporting informed public understanding of marine ecosystems and ecological processes. UBBSLA team uses specially developed software to remotely control the digital kiosks and is responsible for the scenario for the daily content to be projected on the kiosks.
Contribution to Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Management
The deployment of the kiosks contributes to raising awareness of marine biodiversity, supporting environmental education, and promoting responsible attitudes toward marine resources. The initiative also demonstrates the role of innovation and digital tools in strengthening marine monitoring and the sustainable management of the Black Sea.
Locations of the Interactive Information Kiosks
The kiosks are available at the following locations:
- Belferi Ltd. Checkpoint (Southern Pier) – Beloslav Shipyard
- Palace of Culture and Sports – Varna, 115 Knyaz Boris I Blvd.
- Primorski Park, near Mostik, Burgas
- Tourist Information Center – Nessebar
The interactive kiosks are open to the public and provide a modern platform for accessing information on the Black Sea’s underwater environment and ongoing efforts to protect it.
