As part of the EfxINNOs project’s ongoing strategy to strengthen dialogue with regional stakeholders on water–ecosystem–economy interlinkages, its Coordinator and Head of the DUTH team, Prof. Georgios Sylaios, participated as keynote speaker in the thematic event “Environment and Economy,” organised by the Kavala Forest Directorate and the Kavala Forest Service on 15 May 2026 in Kavala.
The event brought together more than 100 participants, including representatives of regional authorities, environmental and forestry services, local government, technical experts, and civil society stakeholders, providing a focused platform for exchange on sustainable resource management under climate pressure.
Within the EfxINNOs outreach framework, Prof. Sylaios delivered a presentation highlighting the increasing stress on water systems, the economic implications of scarcity, and the need for integrated management approaches linking terrestrial and marine environments. His intervention connected directly with EfxINNOs core themes on ecosystem monitoring, climate resilience, and science-based decision support for environmental governance.
The presentation emphasised key structural challenges in the wider Black Sea–Mediterranean context, including intensifying drought risk, rising water demand, and the compounding effects of climate variability on both ecosystems and economic activity. Particular attention was given to the role of data-driven environmental assessment and monitoring infrastructures—core components of EfxINNOs—in supporting adaptive policy responses.
By situating scientific findings within a policy and socio-economic framework, the intervention reinforced the project’s objective of bridging research, environmental management, and stakeholder decision-making. The discussion further underscored the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration between scientific institutions, public authorities, and local actors in addressing climate-related risks.
